Settling Credit Card Debt

Everyone knows it, our country is in a terrible financial mess and everyone is looking for a way out of it. Many of us are saddled with increasingly large credit card debt that seem insurmountable in paying off. The credit card companies begin calling your house wanting to know when you can pay it and all you can think is, I've got to pay my mortgage first and you can have what's left over.

Several life lines are available out there for the consumer who's looking for debt elimination. There are ways to help lower your credit card debt and even your student loans. The key is, you have to do a little bit of the work yourself. You can't expect a company to do it all for you.  Take initiative and call the companies yourself to work out lower payments for yourself. Settling Credit Card Debt can be as easy as calling the credit card companies and letting them know about your extenuating circumstances. Many are willing to work with you until you get a new job, get over this difficult hump or catch up. Many will allow you to reduce or even eliminate  your payments until you are able to pay again. However, keep in mind that your interest will be building up in the process.

Know that not just anyone can settle their credit card debt. You may have heard that your neighbor settled their debt for pennies on the dollar, but you don't know what mitigating circumstances prompted this. Debt settlement is for hardship situations, not just when you're short on cash this month. Loss of a job, divorce and medical problems are common situations that most creditors deem worthy of a settlement offer. Bottom line, if you are making enough money to pay your debt back, you need to be paying that money back. And while it may sound silly to say, it still needs to be said. You can't repeatedly settle your debts over and over again for less than you owe.

Some people will hire a company to help them talk with companies about settling their debts and if you're a shy, timid person, this might be a good option for you. But remember, the company you go through will be taking a percentage fee. So what you've done is acquired a new debt. Is that really what you want?
